Modern Dilemmas

Dear Alex, I used to be obese and thought that my life would change once I lost weight. Now I'm my goal weight but my life is even more of a mess than it was before. People are rude about how I used to look, girlfriends now see me as competition and men treat me differently too. I'm finding it hard, can you help?

We sometimes believe that losing weight is the golden key to happiness when instead it can lead to a whole new host of issues. I think it's great that you are no longer obese, for obvious health reasons, and I commend you on your commitment and success and believe that now should be a time of celebration.

Having said that, with all transformation come big adjustments and that includes you and everyone around you.Neither you nor they should expect things to stay the same when clearly you have moved forward in life. You may believe that you are just the same person you were before, but you would be missing the point. When you embarked on this weight loss something inside of you shifted. It was that shift that fundamentally changed who you are and that's a good thing because it will stop you from going back and so you should embrace it and not worry that people won't love you anymore.

The main issue is change and most people are afraid of it. It is not your job in life to make people feel better by making yourself feel bad, in fact it's your role in life to shine and be the best version of yourself.

You may be thinner, but don't act small. Be happy with your achievement and look to make further improvements in your life. Keep going in that direction, not allowing anyone to hold you back. Help those around you to adjust by making the mental and emotional adjustments first.

Accept that things have changed and for the better and be proud of what you have done for yourself. Understand too that you will get used to people treating you differently, so instead of feeling anxious about that, look forward to meeting new friends and possible boyfriends.

Notice who is supporting you and who isn't. Don't be afraid to drop those who are constantly negative. Let go of

the past and enjoy being you.
