Modern Dilemmas

Dear Alex – I'm a very successful businesswoman but I'm finding that my earning power is coming between me and love. The men I have met so far have been a little uncomfortable with the fact that I earn more than they will ever do. I'm just wondering is there anybody out there who will be happy about it, or do I just need to find my own millionaire?

It's true, finances seem to be so important in many relationships which, of course, is a huge shame. In fact, money is the number one cause of arguments between couples and now it seems that it may well be a cause for not getting together in the first place.

We do all tend to judge each other on looks first, then status, and as you have found out, being perceived to being too high up the ladder can be just as bad as being seen to be too low. Some men don't like it because it's still a fairly new shift in our society that needs getting used to, while others just find it emasculating. But women earning more than men is now becoming quite common – the latest figures show that one in five now earn more than their husbands or boyfriends.

Part of being a successful woman means having a partner who can cope with your success and support it. Finding the right man means finding the right partner in life, someone who loves you for who you are and the fact that you are wealthy.

Your choices aren't limited in who you can be happy with, either. He doesn't have to be older than you, unless that's what you prefer – and don't feel you need to go younger and be your man's keeper unless that is, in fact, what you would want. Avoid putting limits on yourself and who he will be. Instead, stay open-minded and open-hearted.

So hang in there and don't feel that this is how it will be for you forever. Similarly, don't let it change who you are and what you do. And certainly don't let it compromise who you end up with. In other words, don't settle because you fear he'll never materialise.

Focus now on just enjoying yourself, taking the focus away from your frantic searching. The summer's just about here so take time out to relax, rejuvenate and see what happens.
