Monopoly classics get a City of Culture makeover

All six classic Monopoly tokens will go straight to jail after makers of the board game invited the public in Hull to replace them with modern-day alternatives - ranging from Debra Stephenson to a phone box.

Tens of thousands of the new games are expected to be swept off the shelves as the city enjoys its year in the limelight as City of Culture 2017.

The public are being asked to vote on what counters they want by December 31.

The new board will see Mayfair and Park Lane handed over to city landmarks like the Humber Bridge and The Deep with the Chance and Community Chest cards also getting a local feel.

Social media from Lincolnshire is apparently getting steamed up about the prospect of “getting sent to deepest Lincolnshire”, rather than getting sent to jail.

“We have a blank canvas on this and a totally open mind,” said Benjamin Thompson, an executive at games firm Winning Moves UK, who will develop it under official license from Monopoly owners Hasbro.

“We want to hear from the great Hull public on what they see as Hull culture and we will embody this in the new board.”
