New home is in store for Legion at shopping mall

VeTerans who are being forced out of their building because of damage caused in the Second World War are soon to get a new home – in a shopping centre.

The Hull branch of the Royal British Legion have to quit their home in Beverley Road in the city – where they have been since 1926.

City’s poppy appeal organiser Pat Arksey said they were waiting to sign a lease to move into a shop at Princes Quay shopping centre. “We are not relishing the move, but it is needs must,” she added.

Damage was found during an inspection and surveyors estimated the cost of underpinning the foundations to be £80,000. The branch has since been told by the charity’s London head office they must move on health and safety grounds.

The original building is thought to have been left to the Royal British Legion by a Major Robson, of Moor’s and Robson’s Brewery in the city.

The poppy appeal in Hull last year raised more than £70,000, a branch record.
