New luxury retirement apartments go on the market in Leeds.

Westward Care, one of the city’s leading health and social care providers has pioneered a distinct approach to providing accommodation for older people via its Retirement Apartments with care and support available on-site. The company is set to unveil a second phase of properties at its successful Southlands development.

The new homes have been built in direct response to demand for the care provider’s luxurious, self-contained apartments. An added benefit is that unlike some of the more traditional care options in later life, the Southlands’ homes can be purchased, enabling residents to retain their financial assets and protect their estate.

From December 2018, the existing range of 23 luxury independent living apartments that make up the Southlands site will be joined by eight new one and two bedroom homes.

The Southlands properties feature high-end facilities, alongside round-the-clock care and support for residents. Each apartment in the development had been designed to showcase a unique character, with many featuring large windows offering views of the beautiful landscaped gardens.

A key feature of the Southlands development is its generous day space which acts as a communal area for residents to gather in the comfortable lounge overlooking the Southlands’ landscaped gardens.

Fresh, locally produced food created by the skilled on-site chef in kitchens which have achieved Leeds City Council’s highest food hygiene rating of five stars, is served in an elegant dining room. Residents also have access to a varied programme of social activities from Opera North performances to afternoon tea in the restaurant and weekly visits from a hairdresser.

Westward Care has further committed to driving innovation in the care sector by pioneering a new research partnership between Leeds Care Association and the University of Leeds, which is looking at how to deliver better quality of life to nursing home residents.

The Leeds Vision for Extra Care Housing states an ambition to work with partner organisations to construct more than 1000 units of Extra Care Housing by 2028 to meet the growing demand for alternative accommodation and lifestyle options in later life. These extra houses are a direct example of this ambition realised.
