Olympic concerts dubbed ‘a waste’

FREE concerts being held across Yorkshire to celebrate the “Olympic legacy” are “yet another example of taxpayer’s cash being wasted,” critics say.

Folk in Hull, DJ School UK (Leeds), Annapurna Indian Dance and Bradford One, are among cities staging concerts on July 11 to 14. Communities Minister Don Foster said people would get to see “fantastic” performances on their doorsteps.

The musicians will not be paid, but arts body Superact has been given £400,000 to train organisers, and issue grants to cover costs including insurance, for more than 300 events nationally.

A Taxpayers’ Alliance spokesman said: “These gigs won’t be free given that taxpayers will be picking up the for bill them. It’s not politicians’ jobs to run a music festival, let alone 300 of them.”
