Once upon a time, teenage girls were more than happy to confine their beauty routine to a bottle of spot-zapping tone, some pink nail varnish and a little pot of blue shiny eyeshadow. Not any more. Modern teens regard tailored skincare and state-of-the-art make-up products as their due – and not surprisingly, the beauty industry has continued to come up with ideas to satisfy their hunger and entice them to part with their pocket money.

So, many teenage girls (and boys) will be delighted to learn that beauty spas increasingly have them in mind, creating special treatments especially for their skin, perfect for pre-Christmas pampering treats. It's vital teens don't damage their skin with harmful and abrasive chemicals, so care must be taken to find organic and natural products and gentle treatment techniques. Armathwaite Hall Country House Hotel, on Lake Bassenthwaite, near Keswick in the Lake District, is leading the way by taking an educational approach to teenage skincare with its signature Teen Spa facial, which uses the most natural products available, designed especially for teenage skin (and it's suitable for both boys and girls). It is also offering make-up lessons, shape and paint sessions for fingers and toes, skin care lessons and also a deep back massage or a deep back cleanse (again, suitable for boys and girls). There's something for those aged 12 and over, although under 18s do have to be accompanied by an adult. A 30-minute teen spa facal costs 28, at Armathwaite Hall Hotel, on 017687 88900, and www.armathwaite-hall.com.

Perfect for teen pockets, Matalan has come up with a range of sumptuous but reasonably priced pampering bath and body products including shower gels, body butters, body lotions, shimmering body creams, sprays, scrubs, bubble baths and souffls, available in coco, lavender and the uplifting purity scent. Price start at just 1.50, from Matalan.

Good to know teenage girls still like their glitter, although not just on the eyes these days. These little Bellepierre glitter pots can be used anywhere on the skin and come in a range of bright colours, to use on their own or to mix with other make-up or mascara or hair gel. Each pot is 12.99 from stockists at www.bellapierre.co.uk or 0800 0234 190.
