Producers on stage for Live at Leeds

In recent years the role of the producer has changed dramatically. Witness Rudimental who have stepped from behind a mixing desk into live shows.

The four London-born producers work together to create music influenced by growing up around the eclectic mixture of music that soundtrack the streets of Hackney. Their debut album Home, combines soul, hip-hop, jungle, reggae and drum and bass and Rudimental promise to be one of the highlights of this year’s Live at Leeds festival.

“If you go back to the 90s the job of the producer wasn’t really writing it was more of an advisory role, making a project all work together,” says the Rudimental’s Piers Aggett. “These days the producer does a bit of everything, we come up with the idea either with the artist or on our own, we put it together and because there are four of us, sometimes we do the mixing.

“On our album we’ve combined good vocals with vibe instruments. Mixing that with electronic music is our big thing, it will keep people on their toes.” Formed two years ago, Rudimental rose to prominence with the release of the 2012 single Feel the Love and they already have big ambitions. “When we first met we all said we would love to headline Glastonbury one day, however long that takes. Or do our own gig at Hyde Park like Coldplay did and Blur, have an amazing live show and keep producing albums.”
