Purple prose in support of the king of colours

A long time ago, only royalty could afford purple dye, which is how it came to be associated with kings and queens. Happily for us, things have changed and now we call all afford a little purple in our lives. For me, purple is the colour of contemporary luxury. Combined with steel or dark wood, it's a great colour for a bedroom or sitting room.

Feature walls are starting to become a little old-fashioned now, so be brave and paint or wallpaper the whole room. The shade you choose depends completely on your tastes. For a light and airy look go for violets and lilacs or for a dramatic and sumptuous look choose a much darker shade.

My favourite wallpaper store, wallpaperdirect.co.uk, lets you search by colour which is handy. They have a lovely range of papers from floral to the slightly more quirky. Lighter shades such as lilac match well with large floral patters, but opt for contemporary style furnishings such as the Fergus coffee table, made up of steel and reclaimed wood.

If florals aren't your thing, then you could opt for something a little more dramatic. Deep purples work really well in bedrooms and look great combined with chrome units and lots of silver.

To soften the room a little, use lots of fabric in different textures and add in a few girly touches, too. A statement chandelier is bound to turn a plain looking bedroom into a glamorous boudoir.

There's some great purple leather products such as the Nia Chaise from www.barkerand stonehouse.co.uk which, if you've got room in your bedroom, will also add a style statement. If leather isn't your style, then how about a great purple fabric chair? The Cecile, again from Barker and Stonehouse, is a lovely chair in patterned purple fabric. Or there is the Love Chair in crocus.

You can also add in some delicious purple accessories. I love the Opera 3 ball table lamp in Amethyst or go for a bright purple rug such as the Aura or Harlequin Milano Purple rug.

When you've finished your room, you can sit back and admire the handiwork in your right regal purple room.
