Retired chief constable becomes CBE

former South Yorkshire Chief Constable Meredydd Hughes today becomes a CBE following his retirement earlier this year from the force he had led since 2004.

Detective Chief Superintendent Andy Brennan, who heads West Yorkshire Police’s Homicide and Major Enquiry Team, receives the Queen’s Police Medal (QPM).

He led investigations into the disappearance of nine-year-old Shannon Matthews in Dewsbury in 2008 and the murder of Pc Sharon Beshenivsky in 2005. He later secured the extradition of a suspect from Somalia for the first time in UK legal history.

Chief Constable Sir Norman Bettison said he represented the best traditions of painstaking detective work.

He also praised Pc Geeta Lota who receives a QPM for work building relationships with communities in Leeds including setting up a drop-in centre for Asian women to report domestic violence. She now organises an annual domestic violence campaign which has been widened to cover hate crimes, forced marriages and drug crime and has helped to build a forum bringing together religious leaders.
