Review: Hot rock music from explosive Hell Fire Jack

Anyone who doubts that Harrogate can, in fact, rock - and I’m guessing that’s a lot of you - should get along to The Den On Cambridge Crescent tonight, Friday (December 4) for noise-laden alt-rock merchants Black Ocean and brutal garage blues rock duo Hell Fire Jack.

The latter’s new release Sunday Best lives up to the band’s name, its three explosive tracks packing menacing atmosphere and walloping energy from start to finish, writes Graham Chalmers.

Forget Royal Blood or Royal Trux or (laughs) Drenge, mean-faced, ultra-cool duo Alex Trewhitt and Josef Karl could - and would - top the lot if only Alex’s deep, commanding but clean vocals were a little more down and dirty.

Hell Fire Jack blast their way through this EP, from the cracking opening title track to Lock and Key, which boasts the most instantly memorable chorus, to my favourite track, the closing Dark Horse where Alex’s epic reverberating guitar line resonates like the clanging opening chords of the Sex Pistols’ Holidays in the Sun echoing amid the burning sands of a Mexican desert in a Tarantino movie.
