Review: When Harry Met Sally *

At Wakefield Theatre Royal

Never has a production felt more cynical. When the play premiered in London it was not a success critically, yet here it is on a full UK tour.

So why take it out on the road? Was this a story the producers were burning to tell? Well, the film has taken care of that.

Was it that here were two performances so staggering that the whole of the UK should get to see them? With all due respect to soap actors Rupert Hill and Sarah Jayne Dunn, no. To be fair to Hill, he is at least watchable as Harry. You come to the conclusion that this is a play based on a really well loved film, which meant people would buy tickets regardless of the quality. I'm not saying that everyone involved hasn't tried their best, but seeing this production, which is touring the UK following its premiere in Wakefield last week, all it appears to do is sully the memory of a perfectly realised film.

Do yourself a favour and watch that again instead.
