Ringing the changes

Gateways School, in Harewood, Leeds, has unveiled an impressive new outdoor learning environment for children in the nursery and reception sections.

Carol Bartle, head of pre-prep, who spearheaded the project, said: "We consulted the children at every stage about what they would like to see in the space and the kinds of things they would like in the gardens.

"We compiled a book of their pictures and pieces of writing on the subject and also made a DVD in which they talked about their ideas."

The resulting outdoor space includes a herb garden, a vegetable patch, a sandpit, buddy bench and mini beast hotel and fruit trees so that they grow – and eat – their own apples, pears and plums.

There is also a separate play area and music garden with giant musical instruments, made out of recyclable materials.

Headmistress Yvonne Wilkinson said: "The gardens are not only pleasant places for the children to spend time, they also provide a huge number of new educational opportunities."
