The Scandinavians are coming with more home comforts

Independent high street hardware stores have always been treasure troves full of useful, well-designed must-haves backed up with great service from staff who know what they are talking about.

Sadly, we have lost too many of them and the big, out-of-town DIY

retailers have not filled the gap.

Swedish retailer Clas Ohlson, which has 100 outlets in Scandinavia, is hoping to provide an alternative by opening large high street stores in town centres with the emphasis on value and customer service.

Its seventh UK shop opens in the old Allders store on the Headrow in Leeds on April 30. It covers 23,000 square feet and boasts more than 10,000 products including everything from tools and pens to light switches and some interesting homeware.

Most are their own designs, which means you won't see them everywhere. Our favourites include the Laura Candelabrum for 14.99, the Alex table lamp 12.99 or two for 19.99 and the strikingly simple wall clock for 14.99.

A browse through their catalogue also reveals some keenly priced glassware, bakeware and some attractive door handles.

Almost everything is portable, so are yourself with some sturdy carrier bags before you enter.

Like visiting that other Swedish store, you're unlikely to leave empty handed.
