The aim is for as many as people as possible to be involved in the city’s “big moment” - acting as ambassadors for an expected influx of up to 1m visitors next year.

Martin Green, who heads the Hull 2017 team, said: “This is a huge volunteering programme, with thousands of people required.

“Every individual selected will be a unique ambassador for the city of Hull and for culture. Their skills and development will play a major part in the legacy of UK City of Culture in Hull, as the programme has been built and designed to last for years into the future.”

A series of 22 roadshow events across the city and beyond starts on April 4 in east Hull.

People can find out about volunteering opportunities, which will range from practical event support to volunteer casts in major outdoor spectacles, as well as how to stage an event and apply for a grant.

Volunteers have to be aged 16 and above but there’s no upper age limit. They also do not have to be Hull residents.

The city-wide programme is being supported by the Olympic legacy charity Spirit of 2012, which today confirmed funding of £2.85m.

Spirit of 2012 Vice-Chair Jane Lady Gibson said: “Spirit is delighted to be a Principal Partner of Hull 2017 and we’re particularly pleased to be supporting this volunteering scheme. Living in the area myself and as a University of Hull graduate, I understand first-hand the positive effect something like this will have on the city and the people of Hull.”
