Seaside art exhibition is the real McKee

The Month of Sundays exhibition, by Sheffield-born artist Pete McKee, opens at Scarborough Art Gallery and features six new paintings created exclusively for the show.

The acclaimed artist has become well known for his nostalgic depictions of Yorkshire life and humorous sporting scenes, and frequently uses iconic images of his home town Sheffield, such as Henderson’s Relish, in his artwork.

He said: “I’m really chuffed with the new paintings I have done for this exhibition.

“I’d even go so far as to say they are some of my best ever works.”

Mr McKee will also be performing next week as part of Scarborough’s annual Coastival festival, which runs between February 18 and February 20 and features a host of musicians, artists and comedy acts from across the country coming to the seaside town.

The popular festival counts the famous actor Sir Ben Kingsley, who was born in the nearby village of Snainton, among its patrons.

Mr McKee will be playing with his band, the Everly Pregnant Brothers Ukulele Band, at a free gig at Scarborough Art Gallery on Sunday, February 20, beginning at 12pm.

Following today’s official opening, Mr McKee will be back at the art gallery on Friday, February 25, between 6.30pm and 7.30pm, to talk an audience through his work and discuss his experiences growing up on a council estate in Sheffield and as an artist.
