Sitting pretty on furniture that stands the test of time

Furniture is a pretty big investment, with the right pieces lasting a lifetime. Obviously, sometimes needs must, and we opt for a cheap, "it'll-do" piece, usually when we are furnishing a first home or when something is broken.

But over time we begin to collect pieces we love and cherish. The trend for reclaimed furniture means that we can display those well-worn but much-loved pieces with pride. Ultra-modern is most definitely out.

I would advise, however, not being a slave to trends. It is better to have classic furniture and simply nod to the current trends through other means.

When you shop for an item, particularly a bed, sofa or dining table, make sure you're investing rather than just spending money on something which in a year or so will look dated.

If, when buying the first time round, you consider your options carefully and in the end opt for something you really love, then in years to come it is likely that piece of furniture will still be around.

Classic pieces never go out of date, which means that even when the trend for rustic items fades you will still be left with very useable items. You can always change the accessories to reflect the current trends and seasons.

So, if you're in need of some new furniture what can you look for to make sure your investment lasts?

Wood is always a great choice, particularly woods like oak and walnut. Both go with lots of different colours and fabrics so will remain relevant even when you want to change the dcor.

Plus, you can stain or paint wood if you want an even bigger change.

My classics shopping list from Barker and Stonehouse would include the beautiful Grosvenor bed, a practical sofa such as the Hartnell and a stunning dining table like the Hannover. All are availablefromwww.barker
