Steel City prepares to welcome music fans with open arms

ANYONE looking for their live music fix this weekend might be advised to head to Sheffield as the annual Tramlines Festival takes over the Steel City.

This year, notable acts to play at Tramlines include The Cribs, Katy B, Public Enemy and Radio 1 DJ Annie Mac.

Starting on Friday, the three-day event - which won Best Metropolitan Festival at the UK Festival Awards in 2011 -.will be staged at 15 leading music venues, including the O2 Academy and the Leadmill, and across four outdoor stages, including the 7,000 capacity main stage on

Devonshire Green.

In among the headline acts and the other notable names, there is a rich pool of talent from across Yorkshire also performing.

The excellent Blessa (‘Between Times’ video HERE), who featured on our PostMusic podcast last month (HERE) and have attracted the interest of national music press and 6Music, play the Cathedral on Friday, while there’s also plenty of representation from Leeds too, a host of bands making the short trip down the M1 to take part.

For fans of The Wedding Present, a trip to the Leadmill on Friday night will prove necessary, while - on the same night - fans of the much-hailed Post War Glamour Girls should head over to City Hall for what will be their début appearance at the Festival.

On Saturday, the recently-formed four piece Brawlers (‘Mothers and Fathers’ video HERE) play at Corporation, with Autobahn out to impress at The Harley. The disco funk of Galaxians - as can be heard on this month’s PostMusic podcast which is out Friday - can be heard coming out of the Queens Social Club.

Sky Larkin will look to build on the success of their third album ‘Motto’, playing tracks from the critically-acclaimed third offering at the Queens Social Club on Sunday night.

They will be joined by fellow Leeds band Battle Lines (‘The Walls’ video HERE) with their atmospheric guitars and emotive lyrics and Menace Beach (‘Tennis Court’ video HERE), whose updated take on grunge-pop has seen them praised wide and far.

Millennium Galleries sees the Chicago-born/Leeds-based multi-instrumentalist Juffage take to the stage with his sonically compelling live shows and outstanding one-man show.

As well as the music, there will be plenty of other activities to take part in, during what is seen as a family-friendly event.

This year’s festival sees the welcome return of free-entry, family-friendly areas such as the Peace Gardens, the Folk Forest, the Weston Park party and Barker’s Pool, which will be filled with street theatre, live spray-can art, fairground rides, African percussion workshops, woodcraft, a rodeo bull, bungee run, break-dancing battles and much more.

Tramlines advance weekend tickets can be purchased from www.gigantic.com at £28 (plus 10 per cent booking fee). Weekend tickets are available in advance only and come with a free festival programme (usually £3).

Tickets will be available for sale on the door for a higher price of £16 per day, or £48 for all three days. sfdasdf
