Success is served up on a plate for Yorkshire's finest

YORKSHIRE food and drink was in the spotlight at this year's deliciouslyorkshire awards, at Rudding Park, hosted by Radio 2's resident foodie, Nigel Barden.

Following a record-breaking 450 entries, the winners in 19 categories featured some of the most successful and original companies from around the region.

The awards celebrate the elite of the region's food and drink industry, showcasing local produce and commending the achievements of businesses and individuals from Yorkshire and Humber.

The deliciouslyorkshire Champion, sponsored by Rollits, was awarded to James Mackenzie, chef and proprietor at The Pipe & Glass Inn, in Beverley, East Yorkshire.

The judges considered James as someone who has gone above and beyond to promote and develop the region's food and drink industry, as well as influencing and inspiring staff and customers.

James said: "I am absolutely delighted to receive this award. We are big ambassadors for Yorkshire and it makes me very proud. It's the suppliers that do the hard work; we simply give the warm Yorkshire hospitality. I'd like to thank the team and staff for their huge contribution.

"We set out five years ago to look after people and do the right things to make sure they want to come back."

The first and only Michelin star in East Yorkshire, James runs The Pipe & Glass Inn with his wife, Kate.

"Winning awards is a huge bonus on top of what we do and they inspire you to go on and do even better."

Anna's Happy Trotters won the prestigious deliciouslyorkshire Supreme Product award, sponsored by the Proudfoot Group, for its pork belly, after being selected through a vigorous judging process.

Rosemary Shrager, celebrity chef and head of Swinton Park Cookery, presented Anna Longthorp with her special award.

Anna, 27, said: "I am delighted to win such a prestigious award. It is all down to the dedication and support of the team, butchers and, of course, my family.

"Obviously, I know my meat is good but it's great to get the credit from other people," said Anna who has more than 2,000 breeding sows at her family's farm, in Howden.

"Belly pork used to be very popular in days gone by, and then it went out of fashion. But now it's coming back with the help of celebrity chefs and it's a very good cut of meat."

New for 2010, the Export Award, sponsored by UKTI, went to The Yorkshire Crisp Company, in Sheffield, which demonstrated its passion and determination to embrace global export markets.

Ashley Turner, from The Yorkshire Crisp Company, said: "We've worked hard to forge export links with the international market and we've put a lot of passion and determination into doing so.

"To be recognised for doing this is fantastic and we'll be proud to showcase our award to existing and new clients."

ProperMaid, in Huddersfield, picked up the Outstanding Newcomer award, sponsored by Montpelier Professional Ltd.

Jonathan Knight, chief executive, of deliciouslyorkshire, commented: "The standard of entries for the awards gets progressively higher year on year.
