Surprises in store as you clear out the clutter

I don't think the word storage fills anybody with joy and excitement. For the most part, cabinets are boring, bland and dull and take up space in which we could put exciting furniture.

But, like it or not, storage is an essential part of our homes. We need somewhere to keep all our stuff and, let's face it, most of us love to hoard items just in case they are needed one day.

So I think it's time we took a fresh look at our storage solutions.

We tend to look upon storage as a necessity, which of course it is, but that doesn't mean it has to be bland. Chairs are a necessity, too, but think of all the styles, colours and shapes available

to us.

When you look closely, it's the same for storage, too, only our brains seem trained to think that only something brown and square is capable of keeping our worldly goods in place.

It's also time to take a good look at what we store. We are well into spring now, so if you haven't had a spring clearout what are you waiting for? Charity shops are begging for supplies so do your bit and have a sort out.

Take a good look at what you're storing away. Even mundane items can become interesting if displayed in a different way. Instead of always opting for a closed cabinet, consider open shelving.

Not only will your stuff become a work of art, it means you are much less likely to have a mountain of rubbish stacked messily behind your cupboard doors.

If you are a DVD or book fanatic then show off your collection. Likewise, if you have a set of interesting crockery then display it to its full advantage with a French-style dresser.

But, of course, there are some things which need to go behind closed doors and for this you will need a stylish cabinet. Avert your eyes from anything plain and boring and instead look for something which oozes appeal.

There's plenty of choice when you look, from wood to Perspex and every colour of the rainbow. Whether you prefer to shop online or browse the store, Barker and Stonehouse have exciting storage in abundance. And who knows your simple storage solution may just become the statement piece of your home.
