Bennett’s career in spotlight with home city stage tribute

Playwright Alan Bennett’s work is set to take centre stage at a theatre in his home city of Leeds.

The West Yorkshire Playhouse’s Alan Bennett Season gets under way next month and features productions of pieces including Enjoy and Untold Stories.

Bennett’s acclaimed Talking Heads monologues will be presented at the theatre and also taken on the road for performances in communities around the city. The man himself will be at the Playhouse on Sunday, June 8, for An Audience With Alan Bennett.

Written and set in 1980s Leeds, Enjoy is described as an “idiosyncratic examination” of northern working-class life.

Untold Stories, meanwhile, comes to the Playhouse from the National Theatre for its regional premiere. Another production, Betty Blue Eyes, will look at how Bennett’s work has inspired others.

Born in Armley, Bennett is one of the UK’s most highly-regarded playwrights and enjoys unofficial national treasure status.
