The star, best known for his roles as Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses and Detective Inspector Jack Frost in A Touch of Frost, donned his shopkeeper’s overalls to become shop boy-turned-manager Granville.

Sir David, 74, was spotted chatting to co-stars and producers as he stood clutching his script in the sunshine outside the store, which the BBC uses for exterior shots.

Joining him on set were Lynda Baron, who plays no-nonsense nurse Gladys Emmanuel, Maggie Ollerenshaw as indecisive Mavis and Stephanie Cole as prim Mrs Featherstone.

Also spotted filming in the quiet streets of Balby, Doncaster, were Tim Healy, James Baxter and comedian Johnny Vegas, who plays Wet Eric in the sitcom.

Open All Hours first ran from 1973-1985, starring the late Ronnie Barker and written by Last Of The Summer wine writer Roy Clarke.

The current series, commissioned after a Christmas special last year, features Sir David as the former shop assistant, who is now boss after inheriting the grocery store from his great Uncle Arkwright, played by Ronnie Barker.
