The actress, who also stars in Call The Midwife, said she would miss the show but it was “the right time to end it”.

Appearing on Steve Wright’s Radio 2 show, she said she wanted to “end it on a high” and did not want the character to go on forever.

She said: “As she gets older, I don’t want her to keep falling over and making a fool of herself.”

Hart, who recently set up a production company with David Walliams, was cagey about rumours that she has signed up to host a new version of the Generation Game but said she was thinking about “an entertainment format” which might have “elements” of the hit show.

She told Wright there would be “two Christmas specials” of Miranda but they “they are going to be the finale of the show, full stop”.
