Review: Instructions for a Better life, The Stage, Leeds University

UNCANNY Theatre is an interesting new company for Yorkshire that warrants attention.

Its first productions showed raw talent but lacked finesse. Its latest show is essentially the same, but somehow it feels like the company has moved on.

Made up of Matt Rogers, Nikolaï Calcoen and Natalie Bellingham, it is a young company that is starting to understand its strengths.

One of those strengths is the clowning ability of Bellingham. Previous productions have seen her outshine the other two members of the company, but this felt like more of a team effort.

Using several inventive storytelling devices, each more low-tech than the last, this is a company that indulges its own daftness and enjoys it. If it continues to do so, audiences will continue to enjoy the indulgences.

Touring.
