Samuel West to take unknown journey in Hull

One of the highlights of next month's Freedom Festival in Hull will see actor and director Samuel West, star of hit movies including Howard's End and Notting Hill, performing the internationally-acclaimed play White Rabbit Red Rabbit at Hull Truck theatre.

West, who is a familiar face on stage and screen – other credits include Iris and Van Helsing and ITV’s Mr Selfridge and Midsomer Murders –will star in the unusual solo role in White Rabbit Red Rabbit. The play requires him to take to the stage and perform from a previously unseen script presented to him in a sealed envelope. Written by Iranian writer Nassim Soleimanpour and presented by Aurora Nova productions, the play is described as ‘a potent reminder of the transgressive and transformative power of theatre’.

This unique production depicts Soleimanpour’s own experience – shared with an entire generation – as a young person forbidden to leave his country. Since it premiered in 2011, White Rabbit Red Rabbit has been translated into 20 different languages and performed over a thousand times by stars including Whoopi Goldberg and Cynthia Nixon.

“The audience will really get to join Samuel on a journey into the unknown,” says Mikey Martins, artistic director and chief executive, Freedom Festival Arts Trust. “And we all get to find out just where theatre can take us. This will be a hugely popular show, book fast as this will sell out.”
