Video: Full Monty bares all once more in Sheffield

ASPIRING young actors have been given the chance to star in the world premiere of a new play based on the hit film The Full Monty.

Sheffield Theatres has been holding auditions for four boys to take the role of Nathan in the new production, which will open at Sheffield’s Lyceum Theatre on Saturday, February 2.

The film has been adapted for the stage by Keighley-born Full Monty writer Simon Beaufoy, who went on to win an Oscar in 2009 for Best Adapted Screenplay for Slumdog Millionaire.

The new play aims to rediscover the magic of the story of six Sheffield steelworkers with nothing left to lose, and will feature songs from the film by Donna Summer, Rod Stewart, Hot Chocolate and Tom Jones.

The 1997 comedy-drama was a major critical and commercial success and was for a time the highest grossing film in the UK.

Boys who passed an initial test during group acting workshops at the Lyceum last month were put through their paces in a second audition at the city’s Crucible Theatre on Saturday, where they worked on the text of the play with director Daniel Evans, associate director Jack Ryder and assistant director Jon Pashley.

Evans, who has been eager to bring the Sheffield-based story back to the city since his appointment as Sheffield Theatres’ artistic director, said: “This is an amazing opportunity for those young actors wanting professional stage experience to work in one of the country’s most exciting theatre complexes, and travel with the production across the UK as part of a nationwide tour.

“We know from previous experience that there are some extraordinary young performers in Yorkshire and the surrounding counties and I’m thrilled that we are able to offer this opportunity to those actors.”

The production will run at the Lyceum until February 23 and then embark on a national tour. Tickets for the Lyceum cost between £9 and £30 and can be ordered from the box office by calling 0114 249 6000.
