The timeless appeal of a true classic

Despite the trends that come and go, classical furniture will always have a special place in the heart of our home. More contemporary designs come along but often their longevity is cut short by new trends. However, with the classics you know that you'll have pieces of furniture that will stand the test of time.

Like our clothes, we tend to have a few pieces which fit with everything. Whether inherited, a cherished piece you invested in or a great bargain you picked up years ago, it is this furniture with all its character that will last through the years as the other fixtures and fittings come and go.

Investing in furniture you think will be part of your home for years to come is important. Furnishing your home is an expensive business but it's worth spending money on items that will last. It is good to remember that what one person classes as a treasured piece of furniture someone else may not like. However, at the end of the day it's your home and it is important to fill it with the things you love. It wouldn't do if we all liked the same things after all! If you want to add to your collection of cherished furniture then it is important to take your time.

Research is important and the use of the internet has really helped. My advice would be to print an image of the furniture you are thinking of buying and stick it to the wall of the room you would put it in. Take a few days to consider your decision and once you're sure you are happy then go ahead. If you're not sure where to start looking for your classic furniture then a good wander round your local Barker and Stonehouse should do the trick or, if you're more of a sofa shopper, visit www.barker andstonehouse.co.uk.

Keep in mind that traditional furniture doesn't mean you have to go for a boring looking room. Use wallpaper, paints, artwork and accessories to make your room stand out. These can be changed easily as trends and tastes move on.

For ideas, look to dcor magazines and rip out pages of anything you like.
