Trim in spring, then enjoy in the summer

It really must be spring, as you can now hear the sounds of mowers on the move every Sunday morning and smell the scent of new cut grass.

For a great summer lawn, cut your grass frequently, but not

too short. A weekly trim now, gradually reducing the height of cut in May so that it gets down to its minimum length of 2cm (1in) for summer parties. Patches of moss in shady areas and the inevitable weed should be dealt with by applying one of the

many weed-and-feeds such as EverGreen Complete, which greens the grass and kills the moss and weeds. By building a thick, green lawn with stronger roots, the grass plants can better absorb water and nutrients.

This helps protect your lawn against heat, drought and

other stresses.

To complete the look, use a pair of edging shears (or, if you have a steady eye and a straight-edge, a spade) to cut the lawn edges. If the lawn is all curves, use a hosepipe as a guide.
