Twiggy’s still got the look

Supermodels never fade, they only grow in confidence. Take Twiggy Lawson, whose iconic doe-eyed look spearheaded the style revolution of the 60s. Five decades on, she is still at the forefront of fashion – and not about to be told what to wear.

“A woman shouldn’t be defined by her age,” she says. “Our style should represent who we are, not what other people think we should wear. It’s about attitude and confidence.”

In a world which demands that women do not age, Twiggy believes in integrity. “I think it’s very important that the mature woman is represented in the media, and represented honestly,” she says. “I have been in the fashion industry since I was 16 and people have seen me grow naturally, which I think is very healthy. It’s important for the younger generation to see mature women looking and feeling fabulous and still being successful.”

Twiggy follows her own style rules. “For me, the key to looking fabulous is to stick to what you know suits you, but add glam pieces to give them a little update,” she says.

For her latest collection for Marks & Spencer, launched online last week, she has designed clothes she would wear herself, but also appeal to women with different styles and body shapes.

“We’ve reworked a lot of the classic looks, giving them a modern twist,” she says. “The leather leggings, teamed with a smart blouse and blazer, provides a great look to take you from day to night effortlessly.”

A bright pink lace dress she designed for her daughter’s wedding received so many compliments, she decided to add it to the collection.

“I have always been a seamstress and a knitter,” she says. “The fashion industry has been a big part of my life and I have picked up quite a few styling tips along the way.”

Now 64, Twiggy says that with maturity has come confidence and contentment.

“I’m very happy in my own skin and am enjoying life to the full. Plus I don’t worry about the small things any more – you definitely gain a lot of perspective in your 60s.”
