Vulcan hangar tours on offer to ensure final summer in the sky

Charity bosses struggling to raise £400,000 to give the Vulcan bomber a final summer in the sky are selling tours of the Yorkshire hangar where the aircraft is undergoing its latest service.

The Vulcan to the Sky Trust has already banked almost £300,000 towards its target, which will help the Cold War bomber achieve the correct paperwork to fly during the 2013 airshow season.

But in a bid to raise the final £100,000, trust workers have called on enthusiasts to take up the offer of an “up close” experience and the chance to talk to engineers involved.

The Vulcan was moved to Robin Hood Airport in Doncaster in 2011, and since then the Vulcan to the Sky team have used one of the airport’s hangars for maintenance and storing the aircraft when it is not in flight.

Michael Trotter, business development director of the trust, said: “We are excited people can witness our pride and joy first hand in the run up to Christmas and New Year. Seeing her up close is unforgettable and something we are keen to share.”

Earlier this year it was announced 2013 would be the last airshow season for Vulcan XH558, which was restored to the sky five years ago, because of spiralling costs.
