The Yorkshire Post says: Art for our sake. A creative enclave in the Moors

IT has long been the case that creative types have been drawn to Yorkshire by the incomparable beauty of the Dales, the moors and the coast. But even by our standards, the little settlement of Lockton, on the edge of the North York Moors, is in a class by itself.

Of its 200 or so inhabitants, no fewer than 12 are professional artists, a statistic that makes it almost a company town, or at least a company village.

This week, its artistic community has mounted an exhibition at the village hall, an attraction that in its first three days alone doubled the resident population.

Trade has come from far and wide, brought in by new communications media like Facebook, and by the extremely traditional method of arriving by steam train at the station in the neighbouring village of Levisham, a mile or so over the moors.

It isn’t the only such community in the county – Staithes also springs to mind – but if anyone needed reminding of the inspiration on our doorstep, this is it.
