Not only has this focal point become a noted retail and leisure destination in its own right, but it is now the spectacular setting for high-profile events like the Tour de Yorkshire, and TV’s Antiques Roadshow, that have helped to stimulate trade in Halifax and boost its profile.

One of the region’s most eyecatching restoration projects thanks to the support of bodies like the Heritage Lottery Fund, it also shows how Yorkshire’s industrial past can be integral to the region’s future prosperity. As Nicky Chance-Thompson, chief executive of The Piece Hall Trust, concedes in today’s newspaper, there’s still work to do – and some local residents had hoped for even more shops and restaurants by now.

The challenge now is to build on the successes,
and momentum, of the
first year.
