Yorkshire's restaurants prove to be the toast of the North

YORKSHIRE'S restaurants are once again celebrating after scooping nearly half of this year's Northern Hospitality Awards.

The region came away winners in four of the nine categories of the awards, held this week in Manchester.

Greens Restaurant & Bistro, Whitby, won the award for the Best Restaurant.

Proprietor Emma Green said: "This is a truly amazing achievement and we are delighted to win such a prestigious award. We are looking forward to sharing this success with our fantastic team back in Whitby."

Best Newcomer was Van Zeller in Harrogate.

Tom van Zeller, head chef at Van Zeller, said: "I am thrilled to accept the Best Newcomer award. We have had a fantastic start to 2010 and this award only serves to strengthen our offering going forward."

The Devonshire Arms, Bolton Abbey, North Yorkshire, won the award for the Best Wine Offering.

Brian van Oosten, general manager of The Devonshire Arms, said: "It is a fantastic honour to win the title of Best Wine Offering; one which our team will be delighted to receive and which our loyal customers will be pleased to discover."

Meanwhile, James Mackenzie, owner of the The Pipe and Glass Inn, Beverley, won the title of Best Chef. The pub became the first in East Yorkshire to win a coveted star in this year's Michelin Guide.

"It has been a phenomenal year so far for The Pipe & Glass Inn, and to win this amazing accolade is the icing on the cake. I am absolutely thrilled," said james.

More than 250 guests from restaurants, bars, pubs and hotels from across the North-West, Yorkshire and the North-East, gathered at the Hilton Deansgate, Manchester, for the fifth Northern Hospitality

Awards to celebrate the very best culinary and hospitality skill.

Finalists enjoyed a spectacular evening which was compered by food and drink journalist Nigel Barden, who presented the nine winners with

their awards.

Thom Hetherington, managing director of Moorfield Media, organisers of the awards, commented: "The calibre of entries this year has been exceptionally high and I know that our judges were faced with quite a challenge when selecting the winners.

"I would like to congratulate both the winners, the finalists as well as all those who entered the awards: it is really encouraging to see such passion and enthusiasm and I hope that the North continues to shine in the hospitality industry."
