Your guide to the next seven days in Yorkshire (and beyond)

1. BRAND’S BIG WALK

Comedian Jo Brand will continue her way through Yorkshire today as part of her epic Sport Relief challenge. The 58-year-old, who started her Hell Of A Walk challenge in Hull last Friday, says the week will be the biggest challenge of her life as she attempts to walk 150 miles coast-to-coast, from Hull to Liverpool, in seven days.

Today and tomorrow are due to take her from Thorne, near Doncaster, to Langsett, near Penistone on the edge of the Peak District National Park.

2. THE NEW BBC THREE

Moved online to save £30m a year, the new look BBC Three will be previewed this week. Let’s just hope it gets a better reception than its redesigned logo. The abstract design was met with derision when it was unveiled this month, with some branding it ugly and confusing.

The new design features the standard BBC logo above two vertical lines and an exclamation mark, and has done away with using the number three as a word or figure.

The BBC has said it is designed to ‘fit the digital world’ but sharp-eyed observers have pointed out it bears more than a passing resemblance to the spoof BBC3 logo designed in W1A, the BBC’s hit satirical comedy series about life at the Corporation.

3. FLOODS, A MONTH ON

It was Boxing Day when the combined efforts of storms Eva and Frank plunged swathes of Yorkshire into flood misery with York, Tadcaster and Calderdale among the worst affected. A month on, the clean-up continues as homeowners and businesses attempt to get back to some semblance of normality.

Checks on potential damage to more than 8,000 key infrastructure assets in the region are still under way, with some still underwater.

However, the last four weeks have been dogged by controversy involving everything from the rebuilding of Tadcaster Bridge to the funding of flood defences for Leeds and the feeling that the county has had a raw deal lingers.

4. DAD’S ARMY PREMIERE

Yorkshire’s scenic coastline will be showcased at the world premiere of the Dad’s Army film. Stars from the film including Catherine Zeta-Jones, Toby Jones, Tom Courtenay and Michael Gambon are expected to attend the red carpet event in London’s Leicester Square.

The big screen version of the classic sitcom was filmed in Yorkshire, with the region doubling as the fictional Walmington-on-Sea. The East Riding Theatre in Beverly was used as the village hall and Captain Mainwaring’s office, while the Royal Oak Inn pub in Bridlington can also be spotted on screen when the film is released nationwide on February 5.

5. HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL

Remembrance events will take place across Yorkshire and the rest of the country as part of Holocaust Memorial Day on Wednesday.

As well as pausing to remember those who were murdered or whose lives were changed beyond recognition during the holocaust in which an estimated 11 million people perished, the day is also about remembering in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.

6. CASTAWAY BILL

Microsoft founder Bill Gates will be the castaway on Desert Island Discs this Sunday. The Radio 4 show has landed a rare interview with the world’s richest man as he explains his choice of eight discs, a book and a luxury to presenter Kirsty Young.

Sheffield singer Phil Oakey’s 1985 hit Together in Electric Dreams could be one appropriate choice of song, though the chances of him opting for one of rival Apple’s iPads as a luxury item are something of a long shot.
