BARNSLEY striker Patrick Schmidt has returned to his native Austria to join Austrian Bundesliga side SV Ried on loan for the rest of the season.

The 22-year-old has featured 11 times for the Reds this term, scoring one goal in the EFL Cup win at Middlesbrough in September.

The arrival of Daryl Dike has pushed the Austrian further down the pecking order and he was now been allowed to leave.

The Austrian transfer window is open until Monday and has enabled Schmidt to return to his homeland where he links up with ex-Reds team-mate Sami Radlinger.

Schmidt has struggled for regular opportunities since joining the club in the summer of 2019 from Admira Wacker - signing a four-year contact with a further year in the club's favour.

The forward did make some key contributions from the bench in the Reds' 'Great Escape' from Championship relegation last season, memorably scoring a last-gasp winner against Nottingham Forest in the club's final home game of the season and playing an important part from the bench in the final-day victory at Brentford.

But it has not been the precursor to a change in fortunes and he has made just two Championship starts this term.

Schmidt's exit follows on from the loan departures of several players from Oakwell last month.

Isaac Christie-Davies - yet to make his debut for the club - has joined Slovakian side FC DAC for the rest of the season, while Elliot Simoes has made a temporary switch to Doncaster Rovers, with Luke Thomas joining Ipswich Town on a similar loan arrangement.

Mike Bahre and Jordan Green also left the club by mutual consent after their contracts were terminated.
