Bettys and Taylors reveal online sales tax dilemma – The Yorkshire Post says

GIVEN their worldwide reputation for quality, it’s little surprise that Bettys and Taylors of Harrogate – iconic Yorkshire institutions – have reported a surge in online sales over the past year from discerning customers still wanting the very best tea, biscuits, cakes, chocolates and other delicacies to sustain them.

What is more surprising, however, is that these online orders have negated the need for any of the 1,400 staff to be put on furlough, the national wage subsidy support scheme. It is a testament to the stores, and staff, concerned to be flexible – a stance that has been taken by so many independent shops here.

And this is why Chancellor Rishi Sunak needs to think carefully, preferably over a pot of Yorkshire Tea, about who the Government chooses to target with a future online sales tax. Should high street firms like Bettys and Taylors be treated the same as Amazon when, in fact, they are going the extra mile to avoid becoming a burden to the public purse? Discuss.
