A64 to east coast '˜must be upgraded' as business leaders launch campaign

BUSINESS leaders will today throw their weight behind a major new campaign to upgrade the A64 from York to Scarborough '“ the region's most notorious transport bottleneck.

Should the A64 between York and Scarborough be dual-carriageway?

They will argue at the launch of the A64 Growth Partnership, an initiative backed by both the private and public sector, that improvements are integral to the future success of east coast resorts where a number of significant job-creation schemes are in the pipeline.

Writing in The Yorkshire Post, Barry Dodd – chairman of the Yorkshire, North Yorkshire and East Riding Enterprise Partnership – says there’s a strong case for dualling the road from York to Malton.

Even though improvements are planned at York’s Hopgrove roundabout, he also says long-overdue safety improvements should be carried out at blackspot junctions along the entirety of the route.

“Despite our poor road links, over 1.4m people per year visit Whitby, Scarborough and Filey, making it the second most visited part of the UK after London,” writes Mr Dodd. “If we can achieve the necessary investment in the A64 we can remove one of Yorkshire’s major blockages and take away the frustrations and costs that hold back the businesses and people across our area.”
