Abtech maintains city presence with move to new headquarters

A company which manufactures hazardous area electrical enclosures for the oil and gas industry has invested in new headquarters.

Abtech, which employs around 100 staff, has bought two neighbouring properties on Newhall Road in Sheffield from Threadneedle Property Investments.

The two buildings include a detached 25,000 sq ft industrial unit and a detached two-storey office building of 11,800 sq ft.

The sale to Abtech was conditional upon vacant possession, which meant that Medical House had to surrender its existing lease.

Threadneedle received £1.725m from the sale, including the surrender premium.

Abtech is currently moving into the new premises from Sanderson Street, which is close to Newhall Road.

Austin Laughton, of Abtech, said: “We had been looking for the right property for a number of years now and are delighted to have found a new facility which enables us to maintain our presence in Sheffield and grow our business.”

The deal was brokered by industrial property specialists Gent Visick.

Gidon Amar, of Gent Visick, said: “This is a classic case of all parties benefitting from the deal.

“Abtech bought the HQ they had been looking for, Threadneedle sold two buildings in a ‘non-core’ location and Medical House were able to surrender an onerous lease.”

Gent Visick and Knight Frank acted for Threadneedle Property Investments; Abtech were unrepresented in the transaction whilst Crossthwaite Commercial acted for Medical House.

Abtech, which has a £16.4m turnover, said the move to larger premises would enable all production to be under one roof, and have the additional space to introduce a fabrication area. It also has offices and factories in Germany, Singapore, Holland and Korea.
