Alcumus buys health and safety specialist to help boost growth

A Yorkshire firm that helps to save lives by promoting health and safety has been bought by a private equity-backed business for an undisclosed sum.

Private equity firm Sovereign Capital has announced that Alcumus, which provides compliance and certification services, has acquired Safety Management & Monitoring Services (SM&MS).

SM&MS, which is based in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, is a health and safety and environmental services provider that employs 80 staff.

SM&MS, which has been developed by the husband and wife team of Sue and Phil Morris, helps to ensure that clients comply with regulations linked to fire safety and asbestos manage-ment.

It specialises in the property sector.

Beatriz Shorrock, the firm’s operations director, and Richard Edwards, the business development director, will join the Alcumus leadership team.

Martin Smith, the chief executive of Alcumus, said: “We have known SM&MS for a number of years and are delighted to have acquired a business with such a strong reputation.”

Ben Peacock, the director of Park Place Corporate Finance, advisers to the vendors, said, “Sue and Phil Morris have built a business that is renowned for the high quality service its consultants provide.

“There was significant interest from a number of parties.”

Following the deal, the combined business has a planned 2015 turnover of £23.5m, and it employs a total of 260 staff.
