Amey continues expansion with consultancy acquisition

PUBLIC services provider Amey has snapped up another transport consultancy as it continues to grow its consultancy business.

Amey, which has offices in Leeds, Sheffield and York, bought transport consultancy Transportation Planning (International) Ltd for an undisclosed sum. TPi is based in Birmingham and has an office in Leeds.

The deal follows Amey's acquisition of the rail consulting arm of WYG, another Leeds-based consultancy, six months ago. Leeds-based WYG sold the loss-making business for a nominal sum.

Amey does a wide range of contracts in the North East including design and consultancy work for the North East TechMAC highways contract.

Under this agreement, it manages and maintains message signs, emergency telephones, CCTV cameras and traffic signals, along parts of the M1, M18, M62, A1(M) and A66, on behalf of the Highways Agency.

Amey said the acquisition of TPi strengthens its capability in transport planning, traffic modelling and technical systems, taking its consultancy workforce to 2,300.

Amey chief executive Mel Ewell said: "With transport budgets under increasing pressure, it has never been more important for Amey to deliver value throughout the life cycle of our projects.
