Anger as city pothole busters face axe

A TEAM of “pothole busters” in Hull is being cut by a third, despite the poor state of the city’s roads.

Nine of the 27 staff employed to fill holes will be being redeployed when an £800,000 scheme comes to an end in March.

Hull Council insists it will still be able to cope and has invested in new planing equipment which can fill several potholes at once.

But the announcement sparked an angry response from motorists and cyclists who have to navigate potholed streets.

The Hull and East Riding co-ordinator of the Taxpayers Alliance Andrew Allison, who works as a driving instructor, said: “The roads are appalling. These are the things the council should be concentrating on.

“We pay a lot of motoring tax and we expect a decent road surface.

“The council is clearly looking to save money but roads are a frontline service and this issue should be a priority.”

Last year the council – which is facing £50m budget cuts – filled in 7,308 potholes.
