£60m refurbishment of shopping centre to create 400 jobs

AROUND 400 construction jobs will be created in the £60m refurbishment of Yorkshire's biggest shopping centre, Meadowhall.

The programme, which began in February and is expected to be complete by late 2017, will see both levels of The Arcade, from Marks & Spencer to the central dome, extensively re-modelled, include new balustrades and handrails, redesigned ceiling bulkheads, as well as new seating, lighting, signage and wayfinding.

In the first three months, more than 285 new roles have been created, including seven apprenticeships.

The refurbishment, which is being delivered by Laing O’Rourke, marks the biggest investment in Meadowhall since it opened more than 25 years ago.

Around 44 per cent of the jobs already created, which include mechanical and electrical engineering, steel fixing, glazing, security, and architectural metalwork, have gone to recruits living within the Sheffield area.

Meadowhall centre director Darren Pearce said: “As part of our 25th anniversary celebrations, the refurbishment is an important catalyst to support additional employment opportunities within the local community and beyond.

“We are keen to ensure that whilst the new refurbishment once finished offers an unrivalled shopping experience for our customers, the build also impacts positively on the local economy.

“We are looking forward to continuing to welcome new members to our team and support the roles the redevelopment creates.”

Over the last five years, Meadowhall has supported more than 660 apprentice roles.

Apprentice draughtsman, Josh Askew, 19, from Sheffield, said: “As I’m from Sheffield, when I was told I was going to be working on the Meadowhall project I was really happy as it’s somewhere I often visit with friends.

“To be part of this project which is so close to home is an amazing opportunity for me.

“Meadowhall is also teaching me new things and giving me the experience I require – it’s a real boost into a successful career.”
