Architects with designs on education

DURHAM has been a centre of learning for more than 1,000 years, and, with help from a Yorkshire firm, its university is moving with the times.

Harrogate practice GSSArchitecture has produced designs for a multi-million pound refurbishment of Durham University.

The two-storey Mountjoy Building is being given a new lease of life.

The work, which will be completed in August, will include the removal of internal walls, and the creation of a large contemporary glazed entrance.

GSS partner Jonathan Hunter said: “The client is delighted with the open plan facilities which have been designed to promote communication between people and provide organisational flexibility.

“The majority of the university’s administration departments have been spread over the city of Durham.

“Now we can bring them all together and allow the university to increase its efficiency.

“GSS has substantial experience in the refurbishment and remodelling of older buildings.”
