Backing to help skincare range tap into new markets

A YORKSHIRE-based organic skin care brand is expanding, with support from a group of entrepreneurial investors.

Saaf Skincare was founded by Leeds-based Dr Mah Hussain-Gambles, who has carried out research into the cosmetic sector for 15 years.

The company has a face and body care range that uses organic botanicals and essential oils, with added vitamin E.

The brand has enjoyed significant expansion in the Far East, and it is poised to grow in the UK and Europe, as more consumers seek ethical goods.

It has received backing from a group of investors led by Peter Whitehurst, the former director of innovation and technology at healthcare manufacturer, SSL International.

Mr Whitehurst has also secured support from serial entrepreneur Colin Wright, and a small team of brand professionals.

A company spokesman said: “The team of investors is now working alongside Dr Mah to complement her ability to formulate natural botanicals with combined expertise in sales and marketing, intellectual property, finance and global channels distribution.”

Dr Hussain-Gambles said yesterday: “Saaf has already become synonymous with natural ingredients that refine and restore.

“Now is the time to introduce these skin care products to new and previously untapped markets.

“I’m delighted to welcome Peter Whitehurst and his team to Saaf. Their expertise in exploiting consumer interest will complement my own homeopathic and pharmacological knowledge and enable us to build the brand into a premium, niche skincare range.”

Dr Hussain-Gambles, from Leeds, established the range in 2004. She will help the company to develop more products in her role as technical director.

In 2007, Dr Hussain-Gambles was named as one of the UK’s 20 most outstanding entrepreneurs, at the BT Business Essence of the Entrepreneur awards.

Dr Hussain-Gambles originally created the creams to help her mother, who had very sensitive skin.

The business, which was founded on the kitchen table of her Leeds home, now employs seven staff.

Saaf’s products don’t have added alcohol, fragrance or chemicals.

The range is certified as organic by the UK Soil Association, and Halal by European Halal Servic-es.
