Bank backs sheltered homes scheme

A Yorkshire sheltered housing scheme has won the backing of the Co-operative Bank, which has provided £300,000 funding.

The Mews supported living housing scheme of six flats in Mirfield, near Wakefield, was built by Darren Smith Homes and will be operated by Chevin Housing Association.

It is the first time Mirfield-based Darren Smith Homes, which has built more than 100 new homes in West Yorkshire, has ventured into sheltered housing.

The Mews will provide homes for adults with learning disabilities and is staffed constantly, with the emphasis on promoting independence.

Funding for the building was provided by the Co-operative's Leeds corporate banking centre.

Business development manager at the Co-operative Bank Pete Sumners said: "This deal shows that even in today's tough economic climate we're very much open for business and lending to businesses with impressive business strategies."

Wakefield-based Chevin one of Britain's leading housing associations with more than 8,000 homes under management across 20 local authority areas.
