Mr King, centre, seen with agent Paul Fullerton, right, and Prozone managing director Barry McNeill, left, visited the firm as part of fact-finding tour to help him to assess the state of the UK economy.

Mr King, who was deputy governor from 1998 to 2003, is also chairman of the Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee.

Afterwards, Mr King said: “It is a great pleasure to be back in Yorkshire, and to have the opportunity to talk to local businesses. The Bank of England receives monthly reports from its network of agents around the UK, but for me and other members of the Monetary Policy Committee, speaking directly to companies helps us to understand what is really happening in the economy.” Yesterday, it was also revealed banks borrowed a daily average of £3m in emergency funds from the Bank in the month ending July 9.
