BBC’s Pym to tell of the hope amid the recession

HUGH Pym, the BBC’s chief economics correspondent, is set to deliver an upbeat message on the enterprising nature of many British companies at Humber Business Week’s launch event.

Mr Pym, who worked in Hull early in his broadcasting career, says travelling the country for the BBC has shown him there is plenty of hope and many success stories in the midst of the recession.

“I have come across some very uplifting examples of entrepreneurship and enterprise,” he will tell around 250 guests at Hull and East Yorkshire Bondholders’ breakfast meeting at the KC Stadium on Monday. “The recession isn’t everywhere. Some people are not having one, their exports are positive and they have exciting prospects.

“And the BRIC countries of Brazil, Russia, India and China are providing widespread opportunities to boost export trade across many fields.” Mr Pym will stress the importance of looking overseas for new growth as well as looking at opportunities in renewable energy and moves to tackle unemployment.

He said: “I came to Hull for the start of Viking Radio in 1984 to learn my journalistic trade and covered everything from courts to local sports. For someone like me, from Wiltshire, Hull was a proper big city and I’m looking forward to seeing how it has progressed.”

The Bondholders are a 160-strong group who raise the profile of the area. More details of Humber Business Week at www.bizweek2012.co.uk
