Blockbuster year hope for Cineworld

Cineworld said a line-up of potential blockbusters should lift business this year as it posted a drop in admissions and lower-than-expected profits in 2010.

The group said 2011 boasted an “encouraging” schedule, which includes new Harry Potter and Sherlock Holmes films and an increase in the number of 3D movies.

But the firm, which has 78 cinemas across the UK, saw movie-goers dip to 47.2 million in 2010, from 48.2 million the previous year, although this includes weather-beaten December when Arctic conditions hit sales.

Cineworld reported a 0.3 per cent rise in pre-tax profits to £30.4m in the year to December 30, as revenues increased 4.8 per cent to £342.8m.

Cineworld said films including Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1 and Inception pulled in customers last year.

The group said films set for release this year included animated feature Happy Feet 2.
