Brewery cheered by boost in exports

NORTH Yorkshire’s Wold Top Brewery has reported record growth in exports last year as foreign palates develop a liking for English beer.

The Hunmanby micro-brewer said international sales accounted for 15 per cent of total revenues, with ales shipping to Italy, Ireland, Sweden, Canada and Norway.

Export manager Kate Mellor said: “We dispatched almost 100,000 bottles of beer overseas last year.

“Italy is our best customer and takes the complete range of bottled beer plus casks of Wold Top Bitter, Wold Gold and our limited edition beers, while the bestsellers in Norway, Sweden and Canada are Wold Top Against the Grain and Scarborough Fair IPA.”

She attributed the rise to the growing demand for English beers and, in particular, beer from small, family-owned breweries with local or regional provenance.

The Mellors founded the firm in 2003 to diversify the family farming business.

Production has risen from 100 gallons per week and no paid staff to 3,125 gallons and a workforce of 14 last year.
