Brexit debate for farmers at Great Yorkshire Show

The repercussions for farmers of Britain's decision to leave the European Union will be the focus of a meeting featuring the leader of the National Farmers' Union at this week's Great Yorkshire Show.

Pembrokeshire farmer Meurig Raymond, the NFU’s president, will be joined for the topical debate by Warwick University politics professor Wyn Grant.

Prof Grant was the lead author of the Yorkshire Agricultural Society’s ‘Brexit’ report.

The discussion is being hosted by the Future Farmers of Yorkshire group on the Wednesday morning - day two of the show - and will be chaired by Future Farmer Rob Daniel, an agronomist and arable farmer from Escrick near York.

Among the key points that will be up for discussion at what will be an informal networking breakfast, will be the future of trade, farming support payments, currency and foreign workers.

Event organiser Elizabeth Hudson said the emphasis will be on looking to the future with positivity.

She said: “This presents an opportunity for farmers to tell policy makers what they would like to see in a UK agricultural policy which could ultimately make the agricultural industry stronger.

“Farmers produce the ingredients for the UK’s largest manufacturing industry - food and drink, and it is vital that their voices are heard at this important time.”

The Future Farmers of Yorkshire group was established by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society and comprises farmers, vets, consultants, machinery dealers and land agents, keen to network and share best practice.

The breakfast meeting has become a regular diary fixture for farmers attending the Great Yorkshire Show in Harrogate. It will begin at 7.45am and will take place at the NFU stand.

Talks are expected to start at 8.15am and finish by 9am. The event is free to attend. To register, email [email protected]
